2017 wedding season has pretty much finished and we’re still here. We’re still doing what we love and we’re still a band that loves to play weddings! This year has been a big year for us, we feel like we’ve gone from strength to strength as an Essex wedding band as well as being a stronger unit than ever.
Anyone that knows us has probably realised that we’ve all had a very busy year so to break things down a little, here’s whats been going on with the Essex wedding band;
Dave recently changed jobs to pursue the career that he’s always wanted, working for a really decent musical distributor and supplier. This also meant that he moved out to Hitchin in Hertfordshire to be nearer his job and also his loved ones which means more travelling for our drummer but he still, unbelievably, remains fairly punctual! He’s also recently bought his dream drum kit (Gretsch Broadcaster) so look out for the pink champagne beast at one of our gigs!
Chris started the year by getting married, moving house and starting a professional photography business all within the same month. As well as working full time he’s been photographing weddings throughout the year, as well as still being a full time member of JR. You can see what he’s been up to photography wise here. We’ve had a few people ask the question of who is playing guitar if Chris is shooting weddings? Well, we have a couple of close guitar playing friends who also happen to be pretty handy when it comes to replacing Chris so there’s absolutely nothing to worry about there.
Nik took the plunge this year and decided to quit his full time teaching job to commit to the band full-time. This means he has more time to sort out admin for the Essex wedding band and keep on top of the organisational side of things. He still teaches music in the evenings so if anyone is after bass or guitar lessons give him a shout here. He’s also bought a ton of new gear, most that he didn’t really need but hey, its a passion!!
Sam has had a pretty crazy year. He now plays a lot of weddings during the daytime, acoustically and sometimes during the ceremony. If you want him for your wedding just enquire when you contact the band and we can organise it all for you. He has also opened up his very own vegan cafe in Coggeshall, Essex which sells some of the most delicious foods and juices known to man. So he definitely has a lot on his plate (pun intended).
As well as all this going on we also decided to play the most weddings we’ve ever played in a year. Because of this we decided to no longer play public gigs in the venues, clubs and pubs we used to frequent. This isn’t because we no longer want to, it just isn’t a viable option for us at the moment with so much going on. We’re an Essex wedding band and we aim to play as many as possible! We get asked a lot if we’re playing publicly soon and we’ve talked briefly about doing some more public performances possibly after new year so maybe you’ll see something on the Internet about those soon.
This year also saw us curate and perform in our first Theatre performance at the Quay theatre in Sudbury. We titled the show ‘Motor City Radio’ and conceptually based it on a radio station during the golden era of Motown and Soul music in Detroit. The show was a great success and we sold the theatre out but at the same time was a huge amount of work for us. We plan to expand on the show in the future and hopefully take it on the road at some point. A hard slog but also a rewarding one! We have full video footage of the show and high quality audio recordings so hopefully some of those will emerge at some point for all the JR lovers out there.
So thats about it. 2018 is promising to be ridiculous with some of the most exciting gigs we’ve been asked to play already booked up. You’ll see all about those when they happen! We thankfully keep most of the weddings we play in Essex, Suffolk or around the Essex area but its looking like we’re going to start branching out more. Exciting times ahead for sure.
Peace out & have a good rest of the year!
